After a typical and rich breakfast, surrounded by green fields populated by sheep and goats, you will make your way down to the town of Rio Grand...After a typical and rich breakfast, surrounded by green fields populated by sheep and goats, you will make your way down to the town of Rio Grande. On the way, you will cross rivers and fields and discover the regional terraces, where farmers grow seasonal fruits and vegetables. You will enjoy the surrounding landscapes, animals, buildings, and colors.
After stopping for lunch, you will continue your trek to arrive at the petroglyphs. They were produced by the locals more than 3000 years ago, and represent foxes, flamingos, llamas, and also human beings.
You will then head onto the Arco Iris trail. This trail is named after the different colors you encounter on your way, from the soil to the surrounding red, green and purple mountains.

Your first visit of the day will be Laguna Piedra Roja viewpoint, at an altitude of more than 4000 meters! It is about 200 km from Bolivia and goes via 2 small towns: Socaire and Toconao, which used to be the region capital before the Spanish arrived. The view is worth traveling for, with red and grey colors on the mountains, and turquoise blue for the salted-water lagoon!
Later on, you will visit Menique and Miscanti Lagoons. These lagoons were both formed millions of years ago and bear the name of the volcanoes next to them. From there, you will go on a short hike on the lagoons trail.
