The Alcazaba is an imposing 11th-century fortress situated on a hill in the center of Malaga. The name Alcazaba means ‘citadel’ and it was for King Badis of the Berber Taifa of Granada, using materials from the Roman Theater. From the walls of the fortress, visitors can enjoy sweeping views over Malaga, the sea and the surrounding area. The Alcazaba consists of an outer citadel with turrets and battlements, intended to defend the city. The inner citadel houses a Palace, which is built in the Moorish style. Due to the historic nature of the Alcazaba, it is not entirely wheelchair-accessible but people with disabilities can visit parts of the fortress. There is an elevator from Calle Guillen Sotelo street behind the City Hall which can carry people and wheelchairs up to the fortress, and this service is available from Tuesday to Sunday. The surfaces inside the fortress may be uneven and the fortress does not have accessible restroom facilities.
